Consists of letters, watercolors, photographs, and a pencil sketch. The letters were written by and to Bierstadt and his sister, Eliza. Topics mentioned include invitations to social gatherings, offers to give speeches, descriptions of trips, real estate ventures involving Bierstadt, buying and selling Bierstadt's paintings, and placing Bierstadt's work in exhibits. One requests Bierstadt to contribute some of his art work to raise money for Garibaldi's efforts in Italy. George Bancroft, W.O. Stoddard, and W.B. Tremont are among the correspondents represented. George Bancroft was an American historian and statesman, and an active promoter of secondary education both in his home state and at the national level. As U. S. Secretary of the Navy under James K. Polk, Bancroft established the Naval Academy at Annapolis and later served as U.S. Minister to Great Britain (1846-1849), Prussia (1867-1871), and the German Empire (1871-1874).
